The whole premise behind Diva Sounds is to shine a spotlight on artists who encompass what “real” artistry is all about. On The Voice (airing February 24, 2014), millions witnessed the vocal prowess of TJ Wilkins, an artist that embodied everything that R&B music should be; soulful, heart-felt and smooth.

Thinking outside of the box, this South Central native chose to perform Sir Elton John’s hit, “Bennie and The Jets” and made it his own. “My mom and my dad give me the strength to do what I do best,” said Wilkins as he prepared to sing his heart out for coaches Adam Levine, Shakira, Usher and Blake Shelton.  “There is some risk because its such a well-known song, so I tried to bring the soul and put my own spin on it,” says Wilkins. From the first note of his “Blind Audition”, TJ let everyone know he was a force to be reckoned with.  Before the first verse was even completed Blake Shelton, Usher and Adam Levine selected Wilkins in what turned in to a fight for this powerhouse.

“You took that [song] to a place that none of us could have imagined it could have gone,” beamed Usher as he explained why he hit the button to pick TJ. “Even when you chose to hit piano parts in your falsetto, that right there is the type of creativity that defines an artist. I do hear an incredible R&B record in you and I want to help you be the best artist you can be and win this thing!”

As the moment came pick a coach, TJ chose Usher; an artist he has long admired. “TJ doesn’t lack in confidence. As an R&B vocalist he’s not only the person I want to represent this show, but also me as an artist, because I am rooted in R&B,” says Usher.

Making it through the “Blind Auditions” is just the beginning for this God-fearing young man. If you don’t believe me, check him out for yourself below.
