From the giddy-up, the 2015.5 Volvo V60 T6 R-Design is not your run of the mill sport wagon. Gone is the boxy look that this Swedish manufacturer is known for, and replaced with sleek and angular lines that draw the eye in. Contrasting colors, chrome accents flanked by brake lights and Dual Xenon Headlights with Active Bending Lights that probably framed a rock star’s stage in a past life give the V 60 a funky edge over its counterparts. All is not re-invented; there are still remnants of its predecessors, like its logo’s font…lol! Now don’t get me wrong, it still has the universal appeal that may find everyone from the hipster, a cool college professor and the soccer mom, but don’t be surprised if the soccer mom is rocking a pair of red bottoms. Whether on approach or departure, the V60 is definitely an attention grabber.
The sexiness of this wagon (wow, two words you don’t see hanging out much) is largely due to the R-Design trim level. Rear Diffuser accented with Polished Tailpipes, Unique Rear and Lower Front Spoilers, 19” IXION wheels and Unique Aluminum Inlay and Aluminum Sport Pedals scream, ‘let’s go baby!’
This “new” wagon to hit the marketplace is not just a pretty face without substance, it represents on the road and holds its own like its German counterparts. Powered by a 3.0-Liter Twin Scroll Turbo Alloy 6-Cylinder engine with CVVT and DOHC engine and a 6-Speed Geartronic Automatic Transmission, the V 60 feeds the need for speed. Popping out 325 in horsepower @5400 RPM and 354 lb-ft Torque @ 3000, this wagon is no shrinking violet. The Sport Chassis further kicks up the adrenaline rising, white knuckle (again more words not usually associated with a wagon) experience. With the recent decline in gas prices, the combined 22-MPG (19-City and 28-Highway) allows for a cash-friendly pit stop at the pump to keep the fun moving.
Outside of the snazzy appearance, the power and drive of this wagon is just as exciting as the design upgrades. Agile and performance-driven, the Front McPherson Strut and Rear Multi-Link Suspension constantly had me looking at the badging and affirming, ‘yes this IS a Volvo.’ The All-Wheel Drive with Instant Traction, Power-Assisted Rack and Pinion Steering and Corner Traction Control through Torque Vectoring aided in the track-inspired driving experience.
Still holding on to ‘one of the safest cars in the world’ badge, the V 60 has not relinquished that claim. Safety in the city and on the highways is paramount in Volvo’s commitment to prevent harm to the V 60’s occupants. The Unibody High Strength Steel Safety Cage creates a fortress in the event of a roll over accident. The City Safety feature includes a Low Speed Collision Avoidance System. Enough airbags to protect passengers from all angles, the V 60 has five, 3-point safety belts, Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS) for the driver and passenger and 5 Padded Head Restraints (rear passengers included). The optional Blind Spot Information System Package was a welcomed perk. Vulnerable to the whims of SoCal drivers, the Cross Traffic, Lane Change Merge Aid and Front and Rear Park Assist, proved to be the perfect co-pilot.
The inner cabin of the V 60 carries on the new attitude of this sport wagon. The R-Design Sport Seats with leather surfaces, R-Design tilting and telescopic leather steering wheel and gearshift knob add to the sporty style of the V 60. The 8-Way Power Front Seats w/Driver 3-Position Memory and Lumbar Support set the stage for a luxurious ride. Under the Power Moonroof, the V 60’s inner cabin is a driver’s dream. The floating center stack offers additional storage in an ultra-sleek Swedish design, 160-Watt High-Performance 8-Speaker Audio System and dynamic dash kick up the swag factor of the V 60. The seating configurations satisfy a many seating dilemmas with 40/20/40 Flat Folding Seats with Center Arm Rests. Popping with color, the Exclusive Blue Adaptive Digital TFT Display, Sensus with Integrated 7-inch Color, LCD Monitor served as the central command post of the V 60. As the slogan says, ‘Innovation to keep you connected to the road of life,’ Volvo’s Sensus suite of ‘technologies’ is aimed to close the gap between life inside and outside the V 60 by controlling and scanning features like gas consumption and security status. The Volvo On Call app is designed to connect, control and personalize your experience with the V 60.
Overall, the V 60 T 6 R-Design is the perfect blend of style, function and innovation.
