The minivan hasn’t always had the greatest reputation or its been relegated to the “soccer mom” realm, but the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan shatters the stigma with the uber cool SXT Plus trim. The hard edges gave been smoothed out. The SXT Plus optional Customer Preferred Package 29P and a Blacktop Package really tricked out the 7-seater Grand Caravan. Those upgrades give the minivan a funky edge without trying too hard with features like 17-inch polished aluminum wheels, gloss black grille, black headlamp bezels and black interior accents. Softer lines sweep around body of the minivan with ergonomic appeal diffusing the boxy persona of previous body styles. The dual power sliding doors and low ground clearance offer effortless entry. Interior space is the sweet spot for the Grand Caravan with true third row seating.
A power lift-gate exposes deep storage behind the third row. If more storage is needed, the third row folds for additional space, still allowing for ample seating.
The interior of the Grand Caravan is where a lot of critics will be silenced. This minivan is the ideal mode for long road trips or quick shopping jaunts. Leather and suede bucket seats, leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, 6.5-inch touchscreen display, high-definition multimedia interface radio, overhead ambient surround lighting, rear swiveling reading and courtesy lamps, 115-Volt auxiliary power outlets and 40 BG Hard drive (28 GB available) fill the cabin with all the creature comforts for an entertaining ride.
To add to fun factor the Grand Caravan SXT Plus comes with not one, but two rear 9-inch overhead VGA video screens. From the 2nd and 3rd rows passengers can be entertained via dual DVD-Blu-Ray with wireless headphones. Paired with the Uconnect® Hands-Free Group featuring SiriusXM® Satellite Radio (1-year membership), you can create your own film festival on the road.
Safety is also factored into the Grand Caravan SXT Plus. Standard features like the LATCH, supplemental side-curtain and front seat mounted airbags, tire pressure monitoring, active head restraints, anti-lock 4-wheel heavy duty brakes, and daytime running lights add to the safe ride of the Grand Caravan.
Driving of the Grand Caravan was very agile and smooth. Easy maneuvering, quick pick up and an overall great ride, the Grand Caravan was actually fun to drive. A 3.6-liter, V6 24-Valve VVT Engine with a 6-Speed Automatic Transmission offers up a respectable combined 20-MPG (17-City and 25-Highway). The ride was fluid with the Electronic Stability Control. Putting out 283 ponies and 260-lb/ft. of torque, I had to be mindful of the speed limit; it crept up on you quickly.
The Grand Caravan SXT Plus is minivan with style that you can rock and roll with.
