It’s very rare that I follow a car and miss my turn to get a closer look. That actually happened when I first saw the Subaru Crosstrek on Pacific Coast Highway on a particularly sunny spring day. Compact by classification, but full-sized in personality the 2016 Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Premium is the perfect fit for the spirited loaner or adventurous family.
Designed like a hatchback with an attitude, the Crosstrek has the ability to bring a sparkle to eye as soon as the 2.0-liter Subaru Boxer® 4-Cylinder engine is engaged. Sharp lines and a bold profile give the Crosstrek a sexy off-roading vibe. All the cute design cues and vibrant color options allows the owner to customize the Crosstrek to fit their personality. Integrated roof rails and machine-finished accents give the Crosstrek a sporty appeal while still leaving it cool enough for the hipster. From the 5-star badging, wrap-around headlights and subtle lines that flank the hood to the all-weather tires, hatch with integrated rear spoiler, the style of the Crosstrek is ever present.
The ride of the Crosstrek 2.0i Premium is solid, but really excels off the beaten path. Surprisingly, Los Angeles and Venture counties have a wide selection of terrains to ease into rougher terrains or actual off-roading. Full of winding roads that quickly switch from paved to gravel-laden, transitions like these are where the driving experience in a Crosstrek get kicked up a notch. Features like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD), 4-Wheel Disc Brakes w/Brake Assist, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Fully Independent Raised Suspension offer up a tight and adaptive drive for the road ahead. The handling was firm, but I longed for my days on the snow-covered roads in the mid-west to really put the Crosstrek through the paces; but Kanan Dune Road in Malibu with its twists and turns punched the ticket. Standard features like Traction, Stability Control EyeSight® and Airbags afoot serve as protectors that spring into action when needed. Roads in those mountains are prone to rockslides, so an 8.7-inches of ground clearance was a welcomed feature. Navigating under the open sky with a combined 29-MPG (34 HWY and 29 City), the Crosstrek 2.0i Premium offered up more than respectable mileage for its segment.
The inner cabin of the Crosstrek 2.0i Premium is just that…a premium experience for the price point (MSRP starts at $21,595). The technology of the Subaru Crosstrek is filled with cutting edge features. The STARLINK acts as the brain trust for all things entertainment, comfort and safety in the Crosstrek.
A standard 6.2-inch touchscreen is upgradeable to a 7.0-inch is driver and front passenger friendly. Bluetooth Connectivity, SiriusXM, USB Ports, Blind Spot Detection/Rear Cross Traffic Alert System (Lane Change Assist), Automatic Climate Control w/Filtration, Power Windows and Door Locks, Steering-Wheel Mounted Controls, Rear-vision camera, iPod Connectivity and the technological savvy feature EyeSight® keep the Crosstrek on top of all things cool.
The roominess of the Crosstrek is also very comfortable for 5-passengers and offers a lot of space for storage whether on the roof or via a 60/40 split seating configuration.
So hit the road and soak up all it has to offer in a Subaru Crosstrek 2.0i Premium.
